Amazon Lightsail is a cloud-based service that is being offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS). It brings together cloud compute power and memory for new cloud users or less experienced cloud users.

AWS brings together memory, processing, storage, and transfer into virtual machines for users to buy and then releases that compute capacity as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2 ) instance. Lightsail acquires its compute power from an EC2 instance. Amazon EC2 is a web service that provides us with a secure and configurable computing capacity on the cloud.

The Lightsail service was designed and introduced by AWS to make it simple to understand and also purchase. The vendor has to manage the infrastructure, which shares the same uptime and global regions and availability zones same as EC2.

Amazon Lightsail provides a number of virtual private servers (VPS). These are VMs with the individual OS but have limited access to the physical server resources. Customers can choose among multiple Lightsail plans with the following characteristics:

  • Memory that is ranging from 512 MB to 32 GB;
  • Processors with one to up to eight cores;
  • A solid-state drive with 20 GB to up to 640 GB of storage;
  • Data transfer allowances of 1 TB to up to 7 TB; and
  • Pricing from $3.50 to up to $240 per month

All plans come with a static IP address, intuitive management console, and secure shell terminal access, domain name server management, remote desktop access, and also server monitoring. Customers also have access to all the AWS tools.

Lightsail offers you a variety of OS, applications, and stacks so a customer can build a template accordingly. A developer can use the Lightsail command-line interface (CLI) as a substitute to the console.

Amazon LightsailFeatures

Designed for simplicity Amazon Lightsail provides us with the following features :

  • Virtual servers. Lightsail virtual servers and instances are easy to create or even delete. And, users can also make advanced configurations to the server for networks and storage requirements, for example. Using the Lightsail console, you can install apps like WordPress, Plesk and more.
  • Simplified Load Balancing: Load balancing is automated to enable the web traffic to be routed across instances so a website and its applications can accommodate variations in traffic and functions effectively. And, Lightsail load balancers include consolidated certificate management and also even provides free SSL certificates.
  • Managed databases: Amazon Lightsail can initiate and manage a fully configured Mysql or PostgreSQL Managed databases can be scaled separately from virtual servers to improve the availability of applications and work standalone in the cloud.
  • Containers: The Lightsail Container Service allows users to work on containerized applications in the cloud and access them from the internet. One such example is a Python web app.
  • Upgrade to EC2: Amazon Lightsail is scalable and can be also upgraded to EC2, whenever and if required.
  • Access to AWS services: Lightsail binds with more than approx 90 AWS services via Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) peering.
